How is my data classified?

To determine how your data is classified, based on the level of security needed, use the RCData Sharing and Handling ToolProvides guidance on data storage, sharing, disposal & classification RC Data Sharing and Handling Tool . If the type of data in question is not listed in the DSH tool, review the RCguidance on the IU Data Management siteGuidance for maintaining accurate and appropriate record of research RC guidance on the IU Data Management site . The default classification for research data is “restricted.” However, your data may not ultimately require that level of security, particularly if it was already publicly available. If you have questions about how your data is classified, you may contact the RCIU Research Data StewardData Stewards are responsible for the governance of each subject area RC IU Research Data Steward or consult with an RCIU Research Data LibrarianContact information for IU Research Data Services Librarians RC IU Research Data Librarian .

When considering data classification, Key factors to think about are whether it includes personally identifiable information, any protected health information, financial or legal information, or any other protected information. Additionally, any data that is governed by a data use agreement, a data sharing agreement, or commercial agreement will have specific requirements. To see examples of many different types of data and how they may be classified, you you can refer to the RCData Classification MatrixData classification matrix for various types of institutional data RC Data Classification Matrix maintained by the IU Data Management Council.
