What is the IU Research Security Training, and is it required?

The RCIU Research Security TrainingResearch security training required by federal funding agencies RC IU Research Security Training is a requirement set forth by the National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 and the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, Section 10634. This mandate requires individuals to participate in a training that:

  1. Provides covered individuals with explicit examples of behaviors that have resulted in a known improper or illegal transfer of U.S. government-supported R&D in the context of the research environment, as described to the covered institution by federal agencies
  2. Communicates to covered individuals the importance of U.S. research institutions as a core principle of maintaining international leadership and national security.

Some federal funding agencies (Department of Energy) currently require this research security training for all senior/key personnel listed on an application for a research and development award, before proposal submission. Other agencies (National Science Foundation) have indicated they will require this training in Fall 2025. Training completion will be tracked and linked to Kuali Coeus to confirm completion by proposal submission.

Any researcher may take the training, regardless of proposal plans, and IU encourages all researchers planning future submissions to complete this training.
