HCUP National Inpatient Sample (NIS)

Description

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) includes the largest collection of longitudinal hospital care data in the United States and made possible by a Federal-State-Industry partnership sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS) provides a 20-percent stratified sample of all discharges from U.S. community hospitals and contains data on more than seven million hospital stays. Its large sample size is ideal for developing national and regional estimates and enables analyses of rare conditions, uncommon treatments, and special populations. The availability of data from 1988 onward enables the analysis of trends over time.
